The Stan James brand began life in 1973 as a single betting shop in Wantage, Oxfordshire.[citation needed] The company was founded by Steve Fisher and James Holder, and is now owned by Unibet Group plc. The company was named 'Stan James' by taking the first two letters of Steve and his wife, Anne (Stan), and from James. Nowadays,[when?] the Stan James operations are primarily online and on mobile though there is a shop estate of over 90 betting shops in the UK.[1] Stan James opened their first shop in Compton, Berkshire in 1973.[2]
Stan James Bookmakers
StanJames.com was the trading name of SJU Limited and was licensed and regulated by the Government of Gibraltar and the Gambling Commission of Great Britain. The company's online gambling operations are located in Gibraltar. The CEO of StanJames.com was Denis Kelly.[citation needed] The StanJames.com brand was available in markets across the world, with sports and casino customers from over 120 countries worldwide, but they focused in particular on the UK market and UK customers.
In December 2007, the firm bought the Betdirect bookmaking company, which was established in 1998, from 32Red for £5.75 million.[3] The Betdirect operation was merged with Stan James in February 2009.[4][5] In 2008, they bought the online betting business betterbet.com from the London bookmaker Better.[6][7] In 2009 Stan James started a co-operation with the Austrian BETKICK Sportwettenservice GmbH, together they found the brand SJBET and SJBET24.com (Internet betting) especially for betting shops in Austria, Germany, and Europe. In May 2010 they bought 27 branches of regional bookmaker Pagebet after the company went bankrupt. In September 2015 Unibet Group plc acquired the online gambling business of Stan James Group plc together with full rights and assets.
On 26 February 2018 the Stan James website was shut down. All accounts were transferred to Unibet.
Partnerships[edit]
StanJames.com had been present in several emerging markets where they had operated under alternative brands in partnership with local companies.[8] These included 'Goldenpark.com' in Spain, where StanJames.com partnered with the Spanish land-based casino Group MGA; 'Racing2Day' in the United States, where they were part of a limited partnership licensed by the Oregon Racing Commission; and 'Betpack' in Ireland, which was created in 2009 to offer online betting and gaming to the betting shop network of the same name.[citation needed]
Sports sponsorships[edit]
StanJames.com had been involved in numerous marketing campaigns since the online business was conceived in the late 1990s,[citation needed] including the Stan James World Matchplay from 2000 to 2010, during which time the event grew in size and stature to become the second most important event in darts.[citation needed]
StanJames.com had been notable supporters of British horse racing.[citation needed] The company sponsored the 'Stan James Guineas Festival' at Newmarket Racecourse from 2006 to 2010, and the King George Chase at Kempton Park from 2005 to 2008. Presently,[when?] StanJames.com sponsor 'Stan James Champion Hurdle' at the Cheltenham Festival. The Stan James Champion Hurdle is the final race in the 'Road To Cheltenham' series of races, all of which are sponsored by StanJames.com and had been since 2010. Since the six-race sponsorship began, Cheltenham Racecourse footfall and television viewer ratings had increased year-on-year for the Stan James Champion Hurdle.[citation needed]
Marketing campaigns[edit]
In 2012, StanJames.com launched the 'Who are you with?' advertising campaign.[9] The campaign revolved around two characters called Stan and James who are best friends but completely opposite characters, notably when it comes to having a bet. The campaign's strapline is 'Who are you with?', which was intended to provoke customers to align themselves with either Stan or James, as well as making the suggestion they should join StanJames.com.[citation needed]

Stan James Casino Review Introduction
As you'll hear in this Stan James casino review there is a horizontal menu towards the top of each page that allows for navigation between the Stan James sections. Underneath, is a page header box which includes a small image slider for promotions and a ‘latest winners’ feed. And for once, a left-sided menu is included for the casino game sections, which sits alongside an expandable grid of sixteen game thumbnails. 396 text links can also be found at the bottom of each page which point to every single game in their library.
Although they’ve gone slightly overboard with all those text links, the Stan James casino section has a simple, accessible layout for online gaming. So what about the rest?
StanJamesCasino Bonus and Promotions
In terms of bonuses and promotions, Stan James Casino provides a raft of enticements. However, their welcome package only offers a humble 100% match on first deposits of up to £100. Any winnings accrued must be wagered 40 times before any withdrawals can be made. Five no deposit free spins are also awarded to new players and are subject to 30x wagering. A pretty ordinary welcome promotion, all things considered.
As well as the welcome offer, the Daily £5 Fill Up promo tops up existing players’ accounts every day, provided they wager at least £10 on the day’s selected game. This deal applies to web, mobile and tablet platforms and applies to the following games:
- · Monday – Lights
- · Tuesday – Red Riding Hood
- · Wednesday – Piggy Riches
- · Thursday – Scruffy Duck
- · Friday – Twin Spin
- · Saturday – Victorious
- · Sunday – Reel Rush
In addition, gamers can accumulate points by playing games on the web, mobile or table. For every £10 wagered, Stan James awards a single point which can be exchanged for cash every Thursday. So you’ll receive a £1 cash prize for every £100 that disappears from your bank account. For gamers with limited funds, such an offer is ludicrous. But of course it’s not really aimed at them. Instead, Stan James is going after the high-rollers, which is made very plain by the following sentence accompanying the promo: ‘Play what you want, where you want… and you can earn £1,000s every week – guaranteed!’ Not for rank-and-filers then.
Double points are also awarded under their 6 Appeal offer, when players try their hand at a pre-selected ‘game of the week’.

Stan James’ promotions also extend to their live blackjack tables. Every Wednesday, players who stand on 20 and are beaten by the dealer will have their hand refunded up to £30.
Live blackjack is also the subject of a Gold Cards bonus offer where 200 Gold Cards worth €3,750 are awarded randomly. To be eligible, players need to play between 15:00 and 01:00 CET every weekend. The value of these cards is as follows:
- · 25 cards = €50
- · 75 cards = €20
- · 100 cards = €10
StanJamesCasino Slots
There are 368 video slots on Stan James’ pages at the time of writing, from big-time developers such as NetEnt, Microgaming, NYX, Novomatic, WMS and Quickspin. The games are organised into premium, standard and jackpot games and include titles like Avalon, Demolition Squad, Dragon Island and Game of Thrones.
StanJamesCasino Games
On the main site, the casino games open up into a small browser window. Unfortunately, demo versions are not available, which is a shame – it’s always worth trying your hand at a game before wagering real money.
Live Dealer Games
Because Stan James is owned by Unibet, players are able to access their dedicated live tables, featuring blackjack, casino hold’em and baccarat. All live games are powered by Evolution Live Casino software which is fully optimised to work across all devices.
Stan James Mobile App
StanJamesCasino App and Mobile
Stan James Mobile Alabama
Stan James Casino is available on mobile and can be accessed through its standard URL. Unfortunately, when we visited, the app’s viewport hadn’t been properly configured because some of the buttons overlapped the screen. However, the casino and live casino sections rendered perfectly and strongly resembled the main website – the only difference was the left menu which becomes a scrollable horizontal menu bar on smaller devices.
VIP Scheme
Stan James Poker
The Stan James VIP lounge offers a range of exclusive offers and ‘money-can’t-buy’ hospitality packages. To become a VIP member, you’ll need to spend a cool £200,000 in a four-week period to gain the required 20,000 points. There are three levels: silver, gold and platinum. To join the silver level, 20,000 to 39,999 points are required. For gold, its 40,000 to 199,999, while platinum wannabes will need over 200,000 points to be treated like royalty.
Customer Support
Customer support features two email addresses, live chat and a free telephone number. All of these services are operated on a 24/7 basis, which means that most bases are covered in terms of customer-centricity.
StanJamesCasinoReview Summary
Despite the absence of a dedicated website, Stan James’ casino section includes most of the features you’d find on a typical online platform. There’s an extensive range of games, especially their online slots, of which all operate well across multiple devices. And while there’s a good variety of bonuses and offers, some of these are mediocre at best – the welcome bonus for example isn’t going to break the internet any time soon. In addition, the miserly points system is clearly aimed at high-rollers at the expense of rank-and-file gamers. Despite some of these shortcomings, Stan James does offer a gaming experience to match most of the big-name casinos. Just don’t expect the usual bells and whistles that are often found on these websites.
